There are more Mosques than Churches in the UK

There are just over 47000 churches in the UK, of which 24998 are on the mainland.

There are some 1600 official mosques in the UK.  Mosques, like churches, must be “registered” with the Central Registry Office if lawful marriages are to be solemnised in them.

The first mosque opened in Liverpool, and was opened by Henry William Quilliam on Christmas day, 1889.  He was the son of a wealthy man who converted to Islam in 1887 after a visit to Morocco, adopting the name Abdullah.

Between 1889-2010 (121 years) there have been, on average, around 13 mosques built from new, or converted from old buildings per year.

Some churches have been converted to mosques due to the fact that the church was empty and not used for a long period of time.  Covenants are attached to some redundant Anglican churches, which makes it difficult for them to be used by other faiths. None of these become Mosques, and only two have become Sikh Gurdwaras.  Churches have also been converted to public houses, bars, restaurants, apartments and community halls.

Many mosques are built and maintained by fellow worshippers, and not paid for by the taxpayer as some claim to be the case.
